The Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) in Moral Theology is a degree conferred after students with a basic tested theological orientation and proven competence in moral theology have shown ability for achievement in scholarly research and teaching. The program is focused on completion of a limited number of seminars and the preparation and defense of a dissertation. It aims to prepare students to undertake the responsibilities of teaching and research at the highest academic levels.

The Doctor of Sacred Theology in Moral Theology/Ethics program typically requires at least 30-credit-hour plus dissertation of coursework.
Program Structure
Prerequisites
- Degree Requirements: Applicants should possess an S.T.L. in Moral Theology/Ethics from Catholic University or an equivalent degree from another pontifical university or faculty.
- Academic Competence: Proven competence in moral theology with a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better in S.T.L. work or its equivalent.
Coursework
- Total Credits: 12 credit hours of coursework in moral theology at the 700 or 800 level.
- Doctoral Seminar: TRS 799 Proseminar for New Doctoral Students.
- Grade Point Average: Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Language Requirements
- Ancient Languages: Reading proficiency in Latin and Greek.
- Modern Languages: Reading proficiency in French or German.
Candidacy
- Requirements: Students may apply for candidacy after satisfying all language requirements and completing at least six credit hours of coursework.
- Process: Written request to the Area Director and the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
Dissertation
- Dissertation Guidance: Four successive semesters of dissertation guidance.
- Faculty Advisor: Selection or assignment of a faculty advisor upon entering the program.
- Dissertation Defense: Preparation and successful defense of a dissertation demonstrating technical mastery and original scholarly research.
Comprehensive Examination (Lectio)
- Oral Exam: Prior to the dissertation defense, students must pass a comprehensive oral examination based on the origins, history, and contemporary status of the dissertation's major area.
