Liturgical Studies (STD)

The Doctor of Sacred Theology in Historical Theology program typically requires at least 36-credit-hour plus dissertation of coursework. 

The curriculum for The Catholic University of America's Doctorate of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) in Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology is designed to provide a comprehensive education in the theological and historical aspects of Christian worship and sacramental theology.

Coursework

• Total Credits: A minimum of 12 semester hours from doctoral seminars relevant to the student’s area of concentration.
• Core Courses: Coursework at the 700 and 800 levels, including substantial research papers (25-30 pages).
• Interdisciplinary Courses: Courses may be taken from other disciplines such as architecture, anthropology, and music to complement theological studies.

Language Requirements

• Ancient Languages: Proficiency in Latin and Greek.
• Modern Languages: Proficiency in two modern languages, typically German and French. Substitutions may be allowed based on research needs.

Comprehensive Examinations

• Written Exams: Comprehensive exams over three days, covering liturgical studies, sacramental theology, and an allied area of study.

Dissertation

• Guidance: Four successive semesters of dissertation guidance are required.
• Defense: Preparation and defense of a dissertation demonstrating scholarly research and theological mastery.
