The Doctor of Sacred Theology in Church History program typically requires at least 36-credit-hour plus dissertation of coursework. 

The Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) in Church History at The Catholic University of America prepares students for advanced scholarship and teaching. The program requires students to complete several key components:

Residency:

  • Four semesters of full-time residence are required. If the S.T.L. was completed at CUA, only two semesters are required, followed by continuous registration during dissertation preparation.

Coursework:

  • Core Courses: Students must attend four proseminars and take four doctoral seminars in Church History and related fields at the 700 and 800 levels, including a research paper requirement.
  • Methods Course: TRS 724 Methods in Church History and Historical Theology is required.
  • GPA: Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Language Requirements:

  • Latin: Completion of the Latin examination.
  • Greek: Reading course or examination in biblical or patristic Greek.
  • Modern Languages: Reading ability in German and a Romance language (French, Italian, Spanish). Another modern language relevant to research may be substituted with approval.

Candidacy:

  • Requirements: Completion of coursework, language requirements, and a formal request for candidacy.

Dissertation:

  • Proposal: Approval of a dissertation proposal by the director and two readers.
  • Lectio: An oral examination on historiography, historical context, and primary sources related to the dissertation.
  • Defense: Successful defense of the dissertation in a public oral examination.
