The Doctor of Philosophy in Catechetics program is a 30-credit-hour plus a masters and dissertation degree program.

The curriculum for The Catholic University of America's Ph.D. in Catechetics program is designed to equip students with advanced research, writing, and teaching skills, preparing them for academic roles in colleges, universities, and seminaries.

Coursework

  • Total Credits: A minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the M.A. degree; 36 credit hours if the M.A. is from another discipline.
  • Core Courses: 12-15 credit hours in Catechetics at the 700 and 800 levels.
  • Minor Area: 9-12 credit hours in a related academic area within the School of Theology and Religious Studies.
  • Allied Area: 9 credit hours in an allied area outside the major and minor areas of concentration.

Research Requirements

  • Research Papers: Students must submit four research papers, demonstrating proficiency in using foreign language sources. These papers will be evaluated and placed in the student's permanent file.

Comprehensive Examinations

  • Reading List: Students prepare a reading list in consultation with their examining board, covering key texts in Catechetics, the minor area, and an allied field.
  • Exams: Three days of written comprehensive examinations, evaluated on a pass/fail basis.

Language Requirements

  • Ancient and Modern Languages: Proficiency in Latin and French must be demonstrated by the end of the first semester, with proficiency in German or another modern language by the third semester.
