The Doctorate of Philosophy in Medieval and Byzantine Studies program is a 30-credit-hour plus dissertation degree program.

The curriculum for The Catholic University of America's Ph.D. in Biblical Studies is designed to provide comprehensive training for effective research, publication, and teaching in the biblical field. The program includes the following components:

Prerequisites

  • M.A. in Biblical Studies or a closely related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in Hebrew and Greek (nine credits each).

Coursework

  • Total Credits: Minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the M.A.
  • Core Courses: 12 credits in exegetical seminars focusing on either the Old or New Testament.
  • Minor Testament: 9 credits in seminars on the Testament not chosen as the major.
  • Doctoral Seminar: 3-credit course in “Textual Criticism of the Bible.”
  • Electives: 6 credits in related areas such as theology, archaeology, Semitics, the Ancient Near East, or ancient languages.
  • Language Requirement: Intermediate knowledge of a third ancient language and reading proficiency in German and French.

Examinations and Dissertation

  • Comprehensive Exam: A thorough examination covering the student’s areas of study.
  • Dissertation: Conduct original research and complete a dissertation that must be defended successfully in an oral examination.
