The Licentiate in Philosophy program typically requires at least 24 credit hours of coursework. 

The curriculum for The Catholic University of America's Licentiate in Philosophy (Ph.L.) program is designed to provide a robust and comprehensive education in philosophical disciplines, preparing students for advanced academic and research careers.

  1. Coursework:
    • Credit Hours: A minimum of eight graduate courses (24 credit hours) is required.
    • Core Areas: Coursework includes advanced studies in key areas of philosophy, such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and the history of philosophy.
    • Symbolic Logic: One course in symbolic logic is mandatory.
  2. Thesis:
    • Proposal: Students must present a thesis proposal for faculty approval.
    • Credits: Six credits are awarded for the thesis upon completion of all other requirements.
    • Oral Examination: An oral examination, lasting one hour and conducted by four faculty members, is required.
  3. Residency:
    • Duration: Two semesters of full-time study (or the equivalent) in residence are required.
  4. Additional Requirements:
    • Completion Timeline: All degree requirements must be completed within three years of admission.
    • Doctoral Coursework: Students may take doctoral coursework before completing the M.A. or Ph.L., but this does not guarantee admission to the Ph.D. program.
