The Doctorate of Philosophy in Philosophy program consists of a minimum of 53 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree plus a dissertation.

The curriculum for The Catholic University of America's Ph.D. in Philosophy program is designed to provide an extensive and deep understanding of various philosophical disciplines. Below are the key components:

Coursework

  • Total Credits: A minimum of eighteen courses (fifty-four credit hours) beyond the bachelor’s degree is required, including those completed for the M.A. degree.
  • Core Areas: Coursework encompasses major areas of philosophy, ensuring a broad and comprehensive education.

Candidacy

  • Requirements: To achieve candidacy, students must complete all required coursework and pass one part of the Graduate Reading List Examination.

Additional Requirements

  • Examinations: Completion of a second Graduate Reading List Examination.
  • Language Proficiency: Demonstrated reading competence in French and German through written translation exams administered by the School of Philosophy. These must be completed at least one year before the dissertation defense.

Ph.D. Dissertation

  • Proposal: Within two years of attaining candidacy, students must have their dissertation proposal approved by their faculty board and the Dean.
  • Research: The dissertation must show the student's ability to conduct independent research, mastery of their field, and be of publishable quality.
  • Defense: A public oral examination is conducted by a board consisting of faculty members and external examiners. The dissertation must be defended no later than five years after achieving candidacy.
  • Final Approval: Granted after successful defense and meeting all conditions set by the examination board.
