This program provides the necessary training for skilled, self-motivated readers and researchers in a wide variety of disciplines; it also polishes the language skills of future teachers to a high level so that they will always feel comfortable and confident in the classroom. Students who enter this program may elect the study of Greek to enrich their work, although this is not required. With full-time study, this degree can be completed in two to three years, depending upon when a student elects to take comprehensive exams.

The M.A. program in Latin is a 30-credit-hour degree program.
Latin placement exam
- Taken upon entry into the program; used for placement purposes only
Courses (30 cr / 10 courses total)
- LAT 511, Latin Prose Composition (3 cr)
- LAT 655, Survey of Latin Literature (3 cr), taken in the second year or above
- 8 other approved courses (24 cr total)
Examinations
- Modern language examination in French or German
- M.A. comprehensive examinations in Latin (preceded by sight-translation exam)
Additional requirements
- Submission of 2 approved research papers
