History (MA) and Library and Information Science (MSLIS)

The Catholic University of America's History and Library Science (M.A./M.S.L.I.S.) joint program offers an integrated curriculum designed to develop professional competence in both historical research and library science. This program allows students to earn both a Master of Arts in History and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science more efficiently than pursuing the degrees separately. Students complete a curriculum covering key areas such as archival management, digital libraries, historical methodologies, and research. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academic librarianship, cultural heritage institutions, and other fields requiring dual expertise.

The History and Library Science (M.A./M.S.L.I.S.) program typically requires at least 51-credit-hour of coursework.

The joint degree requires 30 credit hours in Library and Information Science, and 21 credit hours in History of which one course (3 credit hours) must be History 601. The joint program thus requires a total of 51 credit hours, as opposed to 66 for the two degrees taken separately. Insofar as History is concerned, most other requirements apply as for the basic MA: students in the joint program must meet the same language requirement and take the same comprehensive exams, although the joint program requires one research seminar instead of the two required for the basic MA.
