The Catholic University of America Celebrates the Class of 2024 Graduation Ceremony at its 135th Commencement

Actor Jonathan Roumie Inspires Graduates with a Message of Surrender to God

Under partly cloudy skies on the east portico of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, The Catholic University of America marked its 135th commencement ceremony on May 11, 2024, honoring the achievements of its nearly 1,300 graduates.

“Be a light for those around you, and show the world what it is to truly Lead with Light,” said University President Peter Kilpatrick, speaking to a gathered audience of graduates, parents, faculty, trustees, families, honorary degree recipients, and honored guests.

Addressing the graduates directly, President Kilpatrick encouraged them to foster a sense of community and accountability among themselves while never forgetting the power of prayer. “Lean on each other, hold one another accountable, and remember to pray,” he advised.

Jonathan Roumie, actor and commencement speaker, best known for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in the acclaimed TV series “The Chosen,” challenged the graduates to be a positive influence in the world and live according to their values.

“I’ve realized that just because I play Jesus on a TV show, doesn’t mean I can or should stop being Christ to everyone I meet when the cameras turn off,” said Roumie. “We all have the opportunity to represent Him in our own lives, through our actions and choices.”

Roumie also highlighted the power of prayer and the importance of surrendering to the will of God. Drawing from his personal experiences, he spoke about the transformative impact of trusting God and allowing him to guide one’s path.

“The more I commit, the deeper He takes me. The more I seek Him, the wilder my journey gets. In your complete surrender to Him, you will succeed because He was, is, and ever shall be enough,” Roumie remarked.

Honorary degrees were awarded to Jonathan Roumie; Rabbi Jack Bemporad, director of the Center for Interreligious Understanding; John Finnis, author and professor emeritus, University of Oxford and University of Notre Dame Law School; Teresa Pitt Green, advocate, speaker, writer, and co-founder of Spirit Fire and vice president of Healing and Recovery Ministries; and Father Piotr Nawrot, Roman Catholic Priest of the Divine World Ministries.

Reflecting on the experience, Cullen Flaesch, B.A. in business administration, expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his college journey, remarking, "It's fantastic just being surrounded by those that have helped and supported me through college. It really just means the world."
