Owen Moynihan’s Future Is a Slam Dunk

Owen holds a large cardboard sign in the shape of a ticket during a 2024 basketball tournment.

Working with the NBA is a dream for countless basketball fans, and one Catholic University senior made it a reality.

Marketing and Sales senior Owen Moynihan spent a semester in partnership with the Washington Wizards. As a student at The Busch School of Business, his marketing internship with the Wizards brought him closer to the court than he ever thought possible. He worked closely with his internship supervisors to hire talent for the annual Wizards Basketball Summer Camps. While he was working during the off-season for the team, he got to meet former team members, including Christian Laettner and Larry Hughes.

Owen thanks Catholic University for helping him achieve a solid internship before his junior year. “I thought Catholic University did a phenomenal job setting me up for my internship with the Wizards. I think it was second to none in preparing us early, as most of my friends and other universities would not have been in an internship heading into their junior year.”

His time with the Wizards was not the only opportunity that Owen has seized in his four years at Catholic University. He has also gained real-world experience at additional internships, using the skills he learned with his sales major. It’s one of the key reasons Owen chose to attend Catholic University. With a location in the heart of Washington, D.C., opportunities for growth are endless.

As Owen states, “You never know where someone could just be one handshake away from getting to the place you want to be.”

Owen says one of the biggest advantages of Catholic University is the small class sizes and the Busch School faculty, who have always been generous with their time.

“I think it’s a huge advantage that you can actually get to know your professors,” he says. “I know at Catholic, my professors know what my name is. They will meet outside of class for coffee, office hours, anything like that. I’m not one student out of 15,000 where I’m just a number on a page.”

It’s this small campus environment in a big city that is unique to Catholic University that Owen believes has set him up for success after graduation. As he reflects on the past for years, Owen advises incoming first-year students to “just dive in!”

When Owen graduates in May 2025, he will return to his recent sales internship for a full-time position. For the foreseeable future, Owen will be staying in Washington, D.C., and close to the university that shaped who he is today.
