Last night, at approximately 10:19 p.m., our Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a shooting in the area of Monroe and 7th streets, NE. The police arrived at the scene at approximately 9:45 p.m. and found that the victim was unconscious and not breathing.
It is with great sadness that we report the individual who was shot has died. We do not know if either of the victim or suspect has any connection to the University.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) have identified a suspect — a black male in his early 20s wearing a black hooded shirt. As indicated in the information alert sent last night by DPS, the suspect fled toward the Metro station and was armed with a handgun.
The University was informed late yesterday of an incident of violent assault that occurred last Thursday, July 13, involving a recent Catholic University graduate. The victim suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries, and is expected to recover. The incident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m., when the victim was attacked by a group of suspects as the victim was walking from the Metro station to his off-campus residence near Brookland’s Finest. MPD continues to search for suspects in this case.
The increase in violent crime near our campus is a critical issue that requires serious attention, especially on the perimeter of our campus. We have asked for emergency meetings with the MPD’s Fourth and Fifth Districts to address the serious concerns we have about the crime that has occurred just footsteps away from our campus.
We will continue to keep the community informed about developments in the incidents that occurred.
Police are asking that anyone with information about these two incidents to contact them by contacting them anonymously through text at 50411 or calling 202-727-9099, which is their 24-hour command information center.
