The Catholic University of America’s student health insurance is underwritten by Aetna Student Health. The plan provides coverage from January 1, 2024 through August 13, 2024.  The fee for medical coverage is $2,390.91

Catholic University requires all students to have quality health coverage regardless of where they are studying – whether they enroll in the Catholic University student medical plan or have a private insurance plan that meets the University’s requirements.

  • By February 9th, you are required to take action by either enrolling in our plan, or waiving coverage if you are insured under another plan.
  • If action is not completed by this deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in our medical insurance plan and responsible for the $2,390.91 fee. This fee will not be removed from your account after the deadline even if you have comparable medical insurance through your parents or on your own with another insurance company.
To waive or enroll, please log in to the Aetna Waiver and Enrollment Site using your 7-digit student ID number located on your Cardinal Card.  The deadline to waive or enroll is February 9, 2024.  Please review the information below regarding the waiver and enrollment requirements.

WAIVER INFORMATION

Domestic Students

Domestic students with 12 or more billed credits, are required to have medical insurance.  If you believe you have adequate medical insurance and do not wish to be enrolled in The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan, an online waiver must be completed and approved by February 9, 2024. If the online waiver is not completed and approved on or before February 9, 2024, you will be enrolled in The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan and you will be responsible for paying the premium.  Waiver submissions may be audited by Aetna Student Health, and or their contractors or representatives.

Below lists the insurance requirements for domestic students.  Your insurance must:

  • Provide coverage through the Academic Year
  • Provide both emergency and non-emergency health care
  • Cover ambulance transport within a 50 mile radius of The Catholic University of America - Washington,  DC campus

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient medical care
International Students

All International students holding a F1 or J1 visa (regardless of billed credit hours) are automatically enrolled in The Catholic University of America medical insurance plan unless an online waiver is submitted and accepted by February 9, 2024.  All J1 Visa students, except international exchange students, will be required to provide coverage documents and or other records demonstrating that your current medical plan meets the school’s requirements for waiving the student medical insurance plan.  By submitting a waiver request, you agree that your current insurance plan may be contacted for confirmation that your coverage is in force for the applicable policy year and that it meets waiver requirements.  Waiver submissions will be audited by Aetna Student Health, and or their contractors or representatives.  Please note: International exchange students are not eligible for The Catholic University of America's medical insurance plan.

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

If you want to be covered under The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan, please enroll by logging in to the Aetna Enrollment Site using your 7 digit student ID number located on your Cardinal Card no later than February 9, 2024.   Please see below for additional information.

Domestic Students

Domestic students billed for less than 12 credits must complete an online enrollment application to have coverage under The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan.  If an online enrollment application is not completed on or before February 9, 2024, you will not be enrolled in The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan. This applies even if the student medical insurance charge appears on your account, as it will be automatically removed.  A "full time student" designation does not always mean you are billed for 12 or more credits. It is important to check the exact number of credits you are billed for in Cardinal Station.

Students must be billed for at least 6 credits to be eligible for enrollment in the student medical insurance plan. This 6 credit minimum does not apply for dissertation students that are only billed for 1 credit. If Aetna determines that you are enrolled in the student medical insurance plan and fall below 6 credits, health coverage may be terminated, and any paid claims collected.

International Students

It is still required for all International students holding a F1 or J1 visa (regardless of billed credit hours) to enroll in The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan by submitting their enrollment through the Aetna enrollment website.  However, if action is not taken by February 9, 2024, you will be automatically enrolled in The Catholic University of America medical insurance plan unless an online waiver is submitted and accepted by February 9, 2024.  Please note: International exchange students are not eligible for The Catholic University of America's medical insurance plan.

Please Note:  Students not enrolled for courses as a Graduate, Undergraduate, or Law School student are not eligible to enroll in the student medical insurance; even if on an approved medical or academic leave. If a student enrolls online, they will be removed from coverage without notification. Students who are approved for a medical or academic leave of absence 31 days after the start of the semester will remain covered under the plan for the policy year.

IMPORTANT

In the event that you do not enroll during the initial enrollment/waiver period that ends on February 9, 2024, you are not eligible to enroll in the student medical insurance plan unless you have a qualifying event.  The Catholic University of America reserves the right to request documentation to verify a qualifying event in order to determine plan eligibility.

A qualifying event would include the following:

  • Loss of coverage due to a change in job status when coverage is provided by your employer.
  • Loss of coverage due to a change in marital status.

The following are not considered qualifying events:

  • If you voluntarily choose to cancel your own private exchange policy or employer provided coverage during the plan year, you may not request to be added to the Student Medical Plan mid-year.
  • If you become a full time student during the academic year, you may not request to be added to the Student Medical Plan mid-year.

Beginning with the Fall 2023 plan year Dependent coverage is now an available option under The Catholic University of America student medical insurance plan.
