What Happens After a Pope Dies?

Location

Heritage Hall
620 Michigan Ave N.E.
Washington, D.C.

Dr. Kurt Martens is sitting in a library, in front of a shelf of books.

As the world mourns Pope Francis, all eyes are on Rome. It’s been 20 years since a reigning pope died; naturally, we have questions: What happens in a papal funeral? Who leads the Church now? How and when will a new pope be elected?

Professor Kurt Martens, an internationally-renowned expert in canon law, will walk us through the Church’s process for mourning the Holy Father and for selecting his successor. Attendance is available in-person and by livestream.
