Shaima Namazifard, vice president of business services for Tucson Federal Credit Union (TFCU), made the initial connection between TFCU and The Catholic University of America-Tucson. That partnership has grown to include internships, a job offer for a graduating senior, and executives in the classroom — including the CFO — teaching students real-world skills.
It also has led to a $120,000 multi-year gift through the Tucson Federal Credit Union Student Impact Fund that will support student scholarships and program operations.
“Too often, higher education operates in silos, disconnected from industry. The collaboration between Catholic U-Tucson and employers like TFCU gives students experience and practical knowledge to prepare them for meaningful careers here in Tucson. And Tucson businesses know that our graduates are ready to move into professional positions,” said Keiran Roche, the Catholic University assistant dean who leads the Tucson extension campus.
Partnership is Rewarding for Students and TFCU
For TFCU, whose mission includes creating opportunities through service, education, and access, the partnership improves lives and fosters prosperity across generations. More than 84% of Catholic U-Tucson students are first-generation and 73% are scholarship-supported.
“My experience teaching Catholic University-Tucson students has been incredibly rewarding. The students are eager to learn and demonstrate a genuine commitment to their academic and professional growth,” said Namazifard.
“One of the most meaningful aspects has been watching former students thrive in internships, present with confidence, and apply the skillsets we focus on in class throughout their coursework. It’s been amazing to see that growth come full circle, including having a former student join our team at TFCU and develop an interest in business lending,” she added.
Catholic University-Tucson was established in 2020 by The Catholic University of America, which is the only national Catholic university in the United States. The main campus is in Washington, D.C.
The Tucson program provides a career-focused, values-based education in Southern Arizona that is affordable, primarily serves minority students, and prepares graduates to be part of the local business community.
A signature feature of the Tucson extension campus is its corporate internship program. All students studying general management hold multiple internships during their studies.
Three Catholic University–Tucson students have interned with TFCU’s Business Services team. One, Michael Lamb, has landed a full-time position with TFCU. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree this spring.
“TFCU is deeply committed to being more than just a financial institution; we are a partner in our community’s growth. Our partnership with Catholic University allows us to fulfill a vital mission: providing direct career pathways and bridging educational gaps for first-time minority college students. By investing in our community in this manner, we are removing barriers to entry and ensuring that the next generation of Tucson’s leaders has the support they need to thrive,” said Matthew Gaspari, president and CEO.
“This is a powerful example of what can happen when mission-driven organizations invest in students and the future of their communities. Students grow not only in knowledge but in character, to develop their gifts, and to pursue work that contributes to the common good,” said David Long, dean of the School of Professional Studies at Catholic University, which includes Catholic University-Tucson.
Commencement Scheduled for May 16
Nine students will receive their undergraduate diplomas at the May 16 commencement ceremony being held on the main campus of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Earlier graduates are employed in a variety of professional positions, including with companies where they interned.
