Nearing the 25th anniversary of Catholic University’s victory at the 2001 NCAA men’s basketball Division III national championship, this year’s Cardinals were hopeful for a repeat of the national title. The men’s basketball team played Tufts University in the second round of this year’s DIII NCAA Tournament on March 7.

Although they put up a good fight -- leading by 10 points in the first half of the game -- a second half victory by Tufts meant that the Cardinals’ first national title in 25 years was not meant to be. The game finished 74-60, ending Catholic University’s season.

The Cardinals’ victory 25 years ago on March 17, 2001, was the first national title in school basketball history. It was also the team’s 100th win in four years. This year was the third year in a row that the men’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA tournament, becoming part of the “Elite Eight”. We are proud of the men's team for their appearance in the NCAA tournament and hope for the best for next year's season!
