Faith. Fellowship. Fun.
That was the spirit of the first-ever Frassati Fest at The Catholic University of America – a relaxed autumn evening gathering that is sure to be a beloved annual tradition in the making. The night was inspired by the life of the newly canonized Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, who serves as a significant global patron for young adults, athletes, and ordinary people.
“Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati's love for the Eucharist, friendship, the outdoors, and his joyful witness continues to inspire young people around the world,” said Julie Cilano, associate director of Campus Ministry. “Frassati Fest reflects his spirit – faithful, fun, and rooted in authentic community.”
Held on Friday evening during Family Weekend, the event offered a unique window into campus life for both students and visiting families. The night began with Mass, followed by pizza, coffeehouse-style student performances, lawn games, card and board games, and then a community prayer of the rosary. The night concluded with an outdoor Eucharistic holy hour, opportunities for Confession, and Benediction.
Frassati was known for his love of the outdoors and his can-do spirit, and Father Bernard Knapke’s handmade addition to the top of the altar was a perfect homage to him. Frassati was a member of the Dominican laity, so he has a special place in the hearts of the Dominicans, who lead Catholic University’s Campus Ministry team.
The event was funded in part by the first-ever RISE Grant, given to a handful of campus ministries to support creative outreach to college students. Look for this new tradition to continue next fall, in honor of this great new saint.
