The Catholic University of America welcomed more than 850 new undergraduates to the campus community over Orientation Weekend

A volunteer crew of 250 students and staff — including University President Peter Kilpatrick and his wife, Nancy — greeted families and helped move hundreds of students into residence halls. From unloading the trunk to delivering belongings to each room, the whole process took only about 15 minutes per student.

“This is my favorite day of the year because we just see so many great smiling new faces all over campus,” said President Kilpatrick.

It’s the strong sense of community that brought psychology major Ava Zanger back to the University after attending summer softball camps during her high school years.

“I love the energy on campus,” said Zanger.

Fourth-generation Cardinal and nursing major Gabriela Sousa said after decorating her dorm for the first time: “I grew up on campus, and now I’m looking forward to making the place my own in a new way.”

Her proud mother, Maria Kilner Sousa, dean of undergraduate admission, shared some fast facts about this year’s class:

  • 140 honors students
  • 3.45 average GPA
  • 165 incoming nursing majors (largest class ever)
  • From 41 states and over a dozen countries
  • Largest number of engineering, philosophy, and business majors in recent history

“The Class of 2029 represents everything we hope for in Catholic University students: bright, curious, faithful, and ready to lead,” said Sousa. “I’m inspired by their stories and excited for the future they’ll help shape on our campus and beyond.”
